EXACT CHANGE
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this exercise is to improve your performance in mental arithmetic, without pen and paper or aids, and to eliminate most of the thinking associated with how much money you have got in your pocket or whether the shopkeeper gave you the right change. It is also intended to improve your performance, and therefore your enjoyment of being alive, in doing any activities that you do in the course of your everyday life in which you are required to think without the use of pen or paper.
ABOUT THE EXERCISE
You should be familiar with the principle of TABAO and associated warm up exercises.
For the purpose of this exercise the shopping expedition is to one shop and back home. Once you have successfully completed the exercise you will be able to apply the same techniques to a day in town during which you do some shopping and have a meal etc.
When you start doing this exercise plan to include one or two items only and progressively, as you practice, include more and include more thinking as you buy them; like the reasons for preferring one item to another. You will find that as you practice you will be able to hear a lot of your thinking as you select the items and you will still know the exact change you are going to receive.
THE EXERCISE
Prepare yourself to go to the local shop but before you leave your home make sure that you know how much money you have with you and the ‘exercise’ items that you are going to purchase. Memorise the amount of money that you have with you and then proceed to the shop.
As you select the chosen items that you need, memorise where the items are, and the amount of money each item cost.
As you select each item add the cost of that item to the cost of the item that you purchased before and make sure that after each selection you have memorised the total cost of the items that you have selected. When you select the last item you will know the accumulated of cost of all the items. You will know the cash till total before you get to the cash till and how much money you will have when you have you have paid for the items, by deducting that amount from the amount of money you had before you left home.
When you are sitting quietly by yours revise the details of completed exercise including as much detail as you wish eg location of the food and the amount it cost and check that you did know the cash till total before payment and that you had forecast the exact change correctly.
You will hear all your revisionations and your thinking from within your mouth cavity using your tongue and associated muscles as you do so.
